CO2 is a liquid inside the tank. To convert to a gas it needs to boil. Since it boils well below 0ºF this is easy enough to do. The boiling happens because of a release of pressure (when you shoot the marker) and occurs by absorbing heat from the air around it. This is why your marker gets cold or forms frost (especially if you get liquid CO2 into the marker itself).

It depends on what marker you are using. CO2 won't really damage anything but o-rings or rubber seals. As long as these are replaceable items you won't have screwed anything up beyond simple repair.

It won't really damage it, but it isn't the best thing to get liquid up inside it. Just keep a repair kit on hand in case anything pops during a game.

dont put co2 in it foo. its like putting regular gas in a nice car. co2 freezes up and crap so just stick with compressed air. its also so much more consistent then co2
