The registered member total and the members member number is 540 off. The member numbers show that there are 540 more members than the registry knows about. Hmmm...

Amazing, I know, just had to point it out for no particular reason.

Anyone that becomes a admin over the forums will disappear from the forums after a short and sometimes controversial riegn.
That's not just my paranoia showing through. Ask anyone that has been here awhile.

F.T. Phantom

Loosing my mind? No.
You must have something to loose it.
Maybe it is hanging out with my game.
The first member to break 1000 posts, that I can remember was arsenault. The account disappeared right after that. They started a few new accounts and all of them diappeared also. I think it was a conspiracy by Super Dave, the forum mod at that time. Maybe big numbers scared him.

The old format was hit by several cases of conflicting code that changed many forum users SNs into the name of a randomly chosen new member. The ones I remember were Mikerules, paintghost and a name that started with a C. I want to say it was cassey or cassidy. Something like that.
Alot of accounts got disappeared during those incidents.
Mikerules changed my sign up date from April of 02 to the date shown in my sig now. Those incidents were annoying.
danman2008
06-29-2006, 12:01 AM
Cassy was it I believe. Hahaha that was some funny ###### though. Remember all the sigs "I survived mikerules" and stuff like that haha.

F.T. Phantom
06-29-2006, 02:22 PM
The glitches were interesting to say the least.
The forums don't suck, they are just slow and mostly new (as has always ben the case, this is a new player magnet site). The members you started out with have left or moved on. The site dieing for a month or so put the big hurt on it. Cut the traffic the site saw a day to about a tenth of what it was.

on the airsoft forum i used to be registered on, those 540 people would have been the people who were banned/had accounts deleted.
F.T. Phantom
06-30-2006, 12:39 PM
I don't think that is the case here. Banned accounts don't get removed from the database. I haven't heard of anyone with the ability removing any accounts. Something could have changed though. There have been alot of different people in a position to change how things work and never tell the underlings about it.

Young was a site admin from about the time we went to the new froum format until about 3 months ago. He wrote most of the articles and went to all the events PB.com covered during that time. There was quite a bit written during that time for people to reffer back to.
He moved on to another job when the PBc brick and mortar store lost their brick and mortar to redeveolpement.

There is always a wave of new members to the site. In fact, your part of that wave, hehe..
To answer your first questions, yes the forums kindof suck now. All of the cool people left except a very few, and they hardly post anymore. The off topic used to be fun as heck. It was worth staying up until 3 in the morning for. There was always at least one funny topic going. Now it's all useless junk that bores me beyond end. The only reason I stay on is because there is absolutely nothing else for me to do and I guess I still have hope that it might become fun again. Plus, someone that knows what they are talking about has to stick around right? hehe.
The old format rocked and sucked at the same time. I don't remember much about it really. I wish I could have taken some pics or something of it... I kindof miss it.
F.T. Phantom
07-04-2006, 05:04 AM
The "good old days" definitely kept the mod staff busy. I can't say I miss the 2500+ posts a day I had to sift through most of the time. The record I got in one day was almost 8000. The e-mail system goofed and double or triple sent all the posts.
A not so odd fact is that this is a new player forum. It comes up first on when they start searching for PB on the web. It always has been and always will be.
If the forums noobness is getting to you, it may be time to move on. You may have outgrown it. The new players come in waves and each wave has it's own set of questions they all have to ask and not consider looking 3 threads down to see exactly the same question they are asking.
Hearing a group of players with your experience level calling anyone a noob makes me laugh. If you don't have some memory of the days before semis took over, you are a noob IMO. Almost all of the members of this forum are noobs. :P :D

navysealguy

i never thought of it like that but f.t. (as always) is right. after this forum gets players on their feet and they've asked the same questions as the last million new players (thus the number of ion posts) they move on to either dropping paintball, playing more, or posting on pbnation or paintballforum. Without the knowledge this site provides nationers would eat the little new players alive.
btw, this site doesn't have the strongest security. just thought i would add that as a little odd forum fact.

You were new and didn't notice them. There was some topic beig run into the ground. There always is.
The security is a admin/owner/server issue. They have had to deal with it before. The last time, I know of, was just before they changed over to this format. It was interesting.

Are you sure you want to keep reminding me? Somethings are best left forgotten.
This remends me of another odd fact.
People who become disgruntled and feel this site is not up to thier high standards are the ones most likely to make additional accounts to keep visiting the site after a ban. It seems the dislike for the site is directly proportional to the need to be here. As is the like for it or maybe it is just boredom for some.
The more "popular" they are the more likely they are to get banned.

"when you look down and you see who is on the site my name is always first on the list in the morning but at night its like last....."
I have wondered about that one. My best guess is that it is the order in which you refreshed the forum home page. We will have to wait and see what the resident computer gurus have to say about it.

Walama wars were a great time but it was the last time the pbc off topic section was the real off topic section. The bar fights were great, we tried one a few months back and the new members here thought it was too stupid. Our three word stories were peices of art work compared to the ones today. The this or that thread (thats right JUST ONE) was great. When we were unable to access the last page we would make another one. But only when we were unable to access the last page. The kid you were speaking of was Monotone. Any one who was around at the time has to remember Kendo and American Shorty. Good time good times. what else am I missing.

Nation is in the top 20.
This is PB.com. Just clearing that up in case you had the forums confused.
I wonder where PB.com would come into that count?
I stick to the pump forum when surfing Nation. Generaly a good group, but, the newplayers do like to ask the same questions there over and over just like any other place. It makes it hard to quickly sift through the threads for the good stuff.

Two years ago you might have caught the end of it and them seen the old format fold up on itself and the forums die for a month or two.

all yall talk about "the good old days" so i guess today is like bad?
what was the old forum format?
also, it seems like theres been a wave of new members coming to the site... any1 else notice?
256935
Ya today sucks for me..... Ya your in that wave.
257253
Ditto except I remember the old forum quite vividly. Amazing times, great times.
The "good old days" definitely kept the mod staff busy. I can't say I miss the 2500+ posts a day I had to sift through most of the time. The record I got in one day was almost 8000. The e-mail system goofed and double or triple sent all the posts.
Hearing a group of players with your experience level calling anyone a noob makes me laugh. If you don't have some memory of the days before semis took over, you are a noob IMO. Almost all of the members of this forum are noobs. :P :D
257402
Good thing I do have a bit of memory about pump even though I was to young to play then huh FT? haha.
i remember the walamas...disturbing rainbow colored quadropeds... i also remember this one hella long thread in the off topic section about the bible or noah's ark or something like that where everyone had to post three words or something like that. i also remember this middle eastern kid getting ragged on all the time.
259527
Haha good times man. MoNoToNe was your man.
259543
I was in that one walama cult for a while until I left for vaca and yall formed another one. Ya man the people here suck at bar fights. All those posts were amazing. Remember xylob when he left with his plan to take over the world haha, I wonder how far he has gotten.
Hearing the old stories makes me want to stick around longer, and wait things out until things are fun again.
259590
I boubt it PBC sucks now :( and it only gets worse.
i remember the dr incedent. one day he was bustin out teh flames like usual, then the next day his supposed sister starts a thread about him dying of dehydration on the paint ball field. it went on for about a week and it got like what, 200 replys. then some other member that was close to dr was like, "Hahahaha, omfg dr is right here lawl!" we all got pwned that day.
I also remember Monotone/Single Sound. he flamed everyone.
Wait a minute, you guys started a bar fight on the forums now. and they thought it was stupid. those NOOBS!!!!!!
259609
Monotone was like yaitsmeagain back in the day. Ya the pwnage was maximum but he got permabanned for it. Ya as usual the noobs suck.
so i take it back in the day you guys were not as popular?
259856
Ya most of us were. I was kinda lying under the scenes a bit more than I am now but I was still there with the best of them.
Haha FT remember when kendo signed up on the marijauna discussion forum under your name and made a big deal about it hahaha.
261129
Lmao haha good times.
hahaha wonderfulgetting FT to open up haha. I think it would be really nice to have him ack on the forum. If he hasn't died from a drug overdose by now.
261165
Nah I think he is still living he posts on a different forum now I believe though with kazkid8 and alooooooooexx.
boy do i wish i had sginbned up like 2 yrs ago
261196
Like 4 or 5 years ago was the time.
At least 3 years ago. Go back 4 and you could have seen it all from beginning to end.
Two years ago you might have caught the end of it and them seen the old format fold up on itself and the forums die for a month or two.
The forums are still building back up and long way from what they were. Slow isn't to bad. I wouldn't have had time to post as much in this thread or even start it in the "good old days". :D
261523
4 years was my time man. That was the best of times.... man I miss them. In the good old days i would refresh my 56k and there would be a whole nother darn page on a post.
The old forums sound a little sucky to me. Im glad i joined late now. I like this site more than pbnation. It looks better and is faster.
261527
Nope.... they were amazing. You noobs make this forum suck.
I would have to guess dyedude either hasn't noticed it or hasn't thought of anything to add. I don't recall ever posting alot in any thread he was in except for the short threads in the mod forum.

He doesnt seem to be around as much anymore, he must have got a life or something.

The forums were changed after the old format went down and wouldn't get back up. It had many isssues from conflicting code to major security problems. I beleive there were at least 3 seperate events at the end where "others" were hacking onto the server and using it for other things.

Another odd fact: Threads started by F.T. Phantom don't last long on the first page or get more than a couple of posts if any. This one has definitely blown that fact out of the water. 101 posts over 6 pages and is still at the top of the page without being pinned.

Let's see if I can remember some history, it is a little late to be thinking.
Paintball.com has existed as a forum/site since 1996. The current owner bought it in '99 and had the shopstix version up and runnning by mid 2000. I believe breeze's account (the original sn for the owner/prehack pbAdmin) was May of 2000.
There should be some accounts in archinve from before '98. The oldest active account I have seen was from 2001. Most of the pre '03 accounts were altered or rendered useless by one of the glitches. My original join date was April of 2002.

As for IP banning, that is another little know fact. It is a powerful tool with no real use unless you know exactly what you are doing. Ban lengths are descided by the type of offence, the number of time a member has been banned and the general disposition of the mod/admin administering the ban. They can range from hours to permanent.
1 day for a minor offence/warning ban.
3 days for a rules violation and first offence.
7 days for a second bannable offence.
30 days for a major violation.
Permaban for repated warnings/bans and continued stupid behavior.
You can still PM and such when banned.
Suspensions usually kick in when you get to the 7 day ban and above.
You cannot PM and such under a suspension.
There is no option for a permasuspension (There is for a ban) So, the one suspending the acccount gets to punch in a bunch of numbers to make it that way. The is how the 2+ billion number came about for hoxie.

Now that this was answered forever ago....
When I do a perm ban I just hold down the 9 key for a while.

Still have to be careful with the IP ban. On a small forum there is less chance of a mass ban unless you wild card the last couple of sets. That sounds like what happened to the site dyedude mentioned.
When the site was very active, there were a couple of IP bans. No wild cards were used. One knocked out quite a few non offenders. We stopped using the IP then.
There is another reason IP bans will fail. I won't tell that one either. Someone else gets to spill the beans on that one also.

There are two other ways IPs fail now that I think about it. You are on the right track. One is done with out the person realising it and on a regular basis. The other, you need to be at lest semi computer savy.

Coincidence? I think not.
It would seem to be just a fact, but, it possibly could be very odd.

Internet Providers or IP numbers?
If numbers: That is always possible. I would guess they will add number sets or maybe numbers to sets. That woudl give them more oprtions. We need a intense computer fanatic to answer that one.
I would like to see IPs assigned to a individual computer. Fix the number to the CPU and let that be used at all times. Similar to a VIN or something of that nature.

Keep asking/commenting. How else are you going to learn something?
Things are always in flux in technology areas. If you don't like something, give it a few months, it will be upgraded or changed completely.
I can't see the IP number changing to much. They will have to keep it somewhat standard to what is used now or all the programs that deal with them will have to be redone.
Doorman
08-04-2006, 09:15 PM
Oh dear God please no auto-static IP's. That really sucks. Especially when multiple computers are on a network with only a single internet gateway. It wouldn't work as there would be competition between IP's and TCP/IP would be pinging constantly. It'd drag a network to a crawl if not shut it down completely.
As for IP's and the need for more.... there is already the theoretic possiblity of 999 to the 4th power (999^4) possibilities with the given IP structure. However, 255 is the standard top range for any given IP block so there is only 255^4 in use. Subtract the 198 superset and the 255 superset (used for internal network IP naming) and you have 253^4 IP addresses available to be used.
The way they are doing things now is the best way to handle the IP's. Not all of them are locked in at any given time, so dynamic assignment makes sense in keeping a rotating block available at all times. If one was assigned per computer built (or worse on the MAC address of the modem/NIC) then we would be seeing the need for IP's ranging into the 999^25 or higher. This would be because each IP would have to assign to a specific hardware in the computer and they can be changed out or replaced at any given time. Throw away what the IP is assigned to and the IP disappears forever :(

New players blamed for wandering a thread, killing a good one or both?
One negative post can kill a good topic. Usally followed by to much flaming to bother cleaning it up so it gets closed/deleted.
Some of the best thread ideas are inspired by another topic for some reason or another. I have been guilty of that from time to time.
Bobrules got a modification of the standard rule set on the old format in the pump forum. Every thread he posted in in that forum wandered either in his post or right after it. The topic that it wandered into was almost always related and the posts were good, but, by the rules off topic/hijack and should have been punished. I figured a exception to the rules was more in order than a ban.
If you ever see me state "It looks like Bobrules posted in this thread", you will know what I am refferring to.

It isn't that the people ruining what you would consider a good thread are new, it is that they would ruin a good thread even if they were old members. Ignorance is hard to get cured of and they have to attack what they don't understand. The unknown is a scary thing. The "I don't know what it is so I must kill it" mentality is hard to get rid of.
AS for danman and his quote worthyness, anything that that is somewhat thought out and stated in a clear and understandable manner is quote worthy in some context. You seem to have a knack for that.
I get quoted from time to time, but, it is usally a quote only the quoters can understand. I have a tendancy to overthink things and understate them. The quote tl+ has from a topic in the MVP forum is a good example.

That was the general thought, but, it was wrong. Some people got a glimpse into the "exciting" forums of the mods. I wonder how many perused the forum before we figured it out.
Oh, and Mr Kendo is not the Kendo of old (unless he is doing agreat job of pretending to be someone else). It has been checked out.

Yeah, I remember Kendo saying something about drugs in his profile. Merc was a good guy.
I still loved when they had the fake "Clash of the PB.Com Titans".
They made up stories about how they played. You could tell it was staged. Made for a good read though.

Meh that was one of the reasons I was so pissed off over the switch to the new format.... so much was lost.

The switch was neccesary. As much good stuff as there was, there was about 2 millions threads that lagged the entrie system down. This one seems more secure. Lest we want another system crash.

ah we had worse we had hackers lol but danman and the crew scared them away but yea that would suck if we had a system crash

The format switch was definitly needed. The old format was no longer being suported and it was collapsing on itself. The last few months of it were a big part of what killed this sites traffic. It wouldn't come up half the time for me and wouldn't half way work for me when it did. Almost all the mod tools had quit working. If finally gave it up for almost a month or so. There were a few more things going on behind the scenes on the server. The Hack of July was not the first time someone had used the site for other purposes.
I got out of the habit of checking the site after awhile. It took me a few months to get back into the habit. I didn't realy get back into it until Young left, and, I wasn't able to do a whole lot until danman evicted the second wave of hackers and bestowed power upon me. I have become quite active since then.
The format was needed and the last upgrade for it was way past due. We still aren't sure who did the upgrade. It might have been the owner, Burt & company, or the hacker wanting to take care of the loophole before any more wannabes followed their path into the admin regions.
Hmm... That expalanation just seemed to wander.
The new format does seem lot stronger and reliable than the first. To bad we couldn't transfer the good intesting posts such as Xylob's world domination thread or one of Tenshots rants on TWIBS and such. I wonder where he disappeared to?
If comparing the hackers and the old format problems, I would say the old format problems were more annoying. The hack was bad, but, not as persitently annoying like the regular glitches such as mikerules, paintghost or cassie. The final crash was realy annoying.

Hackers > Paintghost, Cassie, Mikerules.
Anyone else who remembers all three would agree with me. At least the hackers were interesting.
On a lighter note, I recently spoke with a person I believe to be Tenshot. I'd love to have him back. He won't give me his PBC name yet. One of those ancient buddies on AIM you can't quite remember.
Also, attempting to locate Xylob. Will keep posted.

Ya the hackers actually gave me something to do for a while.... looking at the website back during Cassie and Mikerules.... and when everyone posted in the guns and gear reviews, wasnt nearly as an interesting problem as what the hackers did.

I have never agreed this much in any post. Dude please bring back tenshot and Xylob.

RIP Old Forums. Kendo was cool to a point then became an asshole when he got into the drug ######.
We lost some good old members from the old forum, Grunge is Dead, etc.

During the hack doesn't count. That was not "our" mod forum. The hackers had control then. It was thier forum.
You would have to add Admiral to that list if that counted. You should add you also started a new topic entitled "Dude". Just to add a little icing to that e-cookie.

are we talking about people who dont come on that often list?
F.T. Phantom

Yep, they were names here before you joined. Possibly before you were even into PB and the related forums.
Grunge was/is a second acount for that individual. They were a quality member, just pushed a little to far with the first account and got a permanenet vacation on that one. They benefitted from my judging the account as much as the person behind it. I only mod the people if they persist in being a pain. Some of our more interesting members have had to get one removed before they got thier act together. That is not a unspoken permit to multi account. It is a rarity for me to let it slide. The member has to keep thier act together and have shown promise in the past before I even consider being tolerant in that area.

Odd Forum Fact:
There are;
49,910 registered accounts that have a post count of 0.
4,084 with 1.
1761 with 2.
I have no idea why I thought about looking that up, or, why I did it, but, there it is. If you want to know the rest, you can do the search. :P :D

You guys remember right before the kendo ###### hit the fan he said he was sick of pbc and was selling his account. Maybe the kendo who we thought was kendo really wasn't kendo kendo. Haha that would make more sense if I said it in person. Alot of good threads were lost with the switch. But there were alot more bad threads that I am glad to be gone. I wish the bar fights, walama, and the world dominiation threads would still be around. As well as paintballers arena that was the biggest and best spin off forum of paintball.com in history. We had some great fighting threads. Who alos remembers the original sig maker for the site? paintball mother areing tom.

To the best of my knowledge, it was the same Kendo. Yes, the Kendo Kendo. Yes, that does go over better in person. It was about that time he discovered altered states through chemical usage. It realy did wonders for him. (Yes, that is sarcasm) You could almost see (through the posts) a descent kid die and be replaced by what was left. Sort of sad.
The bargfights had their moments.
Walalamas, may they RIP and never be reanimated. Man, they were bad.
The world domination thread was definitely good. Xylob figured on at least a thread closure once it realy got rolling if not a ban (they liked to push the rules til they screamed). What they ended up with was almost all the mods joining in on that one. It was to good to close, or, not bad enough to override the goodness.

Energy Hater, was a fellow member who passed away. Very knowledgeable cool guy.
I doubt most of the older members remember him.

Energy Hater died from Lou Gehrigs (sp) disease. He was a store/field owner who liked playing tournies until he was confined to a wheel chair. He had a character (I believe from South Park) in a wheel chair for his avatar. His wife posted shortly after his death. I was shocked. He was a good member who knew his stuff.
I have no idea how long PBN has been around. The oldest thread I found from a brief search was from Feb. of 2001. I remember surfing and joining there about the same time I joined here. This site needed a experinced player to answer a few questions more than Nation, so I stayed here most of the time I was surfing PB sites. 04-19-2002 was my registration date.
There are only: Members: 272,088 (As of the time of posting) at PBN.
