also see thread below ;)
while were on the subject... how can I transfer files from one computer to another without an external like a CD-R or flash drive? Can you buy a USB cable that will allow direct transfer of files so I can erase the other hard drive?

dude, its not hard, i dont fix computer and know how to do it.
there are 3 ways...
1. run killdisk, i think you run with your bios or something, its not hard, just read the instructions that come with it, or find some.
2. take your hard drive out and plug it into another computer that works. take the cover off, unplug the serial/ata wires and power wires, unscrew it (usualy its in a little box that you have to pull out. plug it into another computer the same way, you dont need to screw it in and everything, just plug it in. remember the size of the drive that you just plugged in. start the computer. select what drive you want to boot off of (just use arrows and hit enter, select the one that is not the drive you just plugged in). when it computer starts, just go to: my computer>right click the drive you just installed (it will show up there)>hit reformat. then just put it all back together the way you took it apart.
and the hard drive is the thing thats about 3"x5.5"x1"
3. get a copy of windows, put the disc in. it give you a option to reformat, just do that and dont install windows.
the easiest way is to do option 2, killdisc can leave stuff on your hdd, if you do option 2, you totaly erase everything.
and to transfer files, you need to get an eithernet cable, then set up a network. you need to find a tutorial on the internet on how to do that. you can also use yousendit.com (http://www.yousendit.com) and just download it later. you can do up to a gig i think with a free account.
