I don't understand what you mean by no hardware stuff, since video cards are hardware... but whatever.
Depending on your price range and motherboard there are lots of different options. A good cheaper card would be a GeForce 6800 or even a 6600. Also Nvidia has the 7800GT or GTX out that's one of the fastest available. Those are about 400-500 dollars. You can also go ATi and get some good stuff like 9800 pro (older but cheap) or X800 family.
Your motherboard either has PCI Express or AGP slot for graphics cards. You will need to find out which before you buy one.
In gaming RAM makes a big difference also. 1GB is good for maybe safe to say all games to date. I would suggest Corsair and get two 512MB sticks. Kingston is good too. Look for Value RAM if you're on a low budget.
Processor can make a big difference too but unless you want to look into that I won't give any more details. Last thing is hard drive. Make sure it's big enough and has a fast buffer.

How much would the Corsair 1gb RAM cost?

It's fairly cheap now, ValueSelect is less than 100 bucks. Newegg.com is the place to buy computer stuff.
