Heads up on a virus.

Guy on AIM under flipsmokin14 has tried to send me a link disguised as a link to a virus... Shame I run a Mac...

You see, it's not the AIM virus, it's one that could really damage your computer.

Depends on which virus it is. I recently cleaned out my computer, got rid of one that would make my computer lock up every time I booted up. There are others that could delete your hard drive...

We got a Trojen(sp) horse virus. It really sucked. I don't think a virus could possibly mess up my computer, it wouldn't run correctly. lol. The OP doesn't even work right, I have AOL 5.0. I mean, I probably have 5 viruses right now. And its not a virus that caused all these problems, it was me screwing around too much.

A virus is a program designed to replicate and perform malicious activities, then replicate.

don't click on links that come through IM's especially if it doesn't look right

example

SquirrellDude: hey LOL is this you?

ME: block squirrellDude

yes I know that person, it doesn't sound like something he would say nor would he send the same message multiple times

I know he is infected with whatever it is... I won't IM him or let him IM me that simple

also just because you have a mac does not mean you are safe from a PC virus
a well written virus will be coded for multiple systems and through a network or the internet the drive formatting does not matter

Common sense is the best defence, but i don't expect a thing when I get a link saying "Hey is this a good gun? actionvillage.com/guns/ZX7920I.html (http://hardyharharaviruslink.com)"

Yea I got an IM from a friend saying "doesn't this look like me" or something like that, from Xanga I think. Basically sent out that message to everyone on my buddy list (I had to download it, don't know why I did, probably tired). It downloaded to my Temporary Internet Files folder, so I deleted those and ran HiJack this and it was gone.

I mostly get the adware viruses. I just removed two this afternoon. The xanga site brought alot of viruses to my computer. I had a firend at college who would use my computer with out my knowledge; I wouldn't even be in the room but my roommate would let her in and she went to the xanga site alot. It took forever for me to find all the viruses and remove them from my computer. I think the final count for that was about 23 viruses. The frequent trojan attacks is most likely from a weak firewall. My firewall blocks them automatically then warns me after the threat is gone. If you are worried about the trojan visuses, the Symantec/Norton site was a free Security test for your PC.

For virus I'd suggest either buying Mcafee or Norton virus protection/anitvirus software. Or you can go to download.com and get a free antivirus program. Also I'd get HiJack This or Adaware for Trojans and web browser hackers or whatever there called. Search42 is an example and HiJack This helps get rid of it.

My experience with removing viruses only covers the minor viruses...none of the dangerous ones. And i have only had to locate the corrupted file then delete the file, then delete the file from the recycle bin. I use Norton Internet Security 2005 (IT has the firewall, internet security, antispam, and antivirus). I also use two different anti-spyware programs, which leves my computer protected fairly well overall.

Yes but there are far fewer viruses for the mac than PC, also, be aware of email attachments, especialy if they are .EXE files, those are the ones you have to be aware of.

My friend had about 3 Trojans, 1 worm, and a whole lot of spyware before I fixed it.
one of the Trojans was remote-acsess. Meaning whoever put it on could control the Trojan even if he wasnt online or if the internet was off.

Here is a list of Common Trojans, Worms, Viruses, and Spyware

Trojans:
Win Tools(HuntBar Variant)
eXact advertising Trojan
Bargain Budddy Trojan

downloading illegal music

I can clarify little brother. He had trojans from indeed downloading music. It wasnt illegal, but the night I was at his house for his mothers party, I was lookin at his computer, and by the time the party was over, he had already had 10-11 Trojans in that one night alone.
